Tracking game assets with Git LFS
Limited Capacity seats available

Developers love Git for its speed, distributed nature, and powerful history traversal features. However it isn't (or rather, wasn't) a viable choice for professional game development due to critical flaws with tracking large binary assets. The Git Large File Storage (LFS) extension is a new jointly-developed standard from Bitbucket and GitHub that solves this problem by storing binary content in a specialized file store, and automatically swapping content in and out of your Git worktree. This allows game development teams to version code and game assets together, meaning programmers can collaborate more effectively with artists, animators, designers, audio engineers and all other creative contributors within the same codebase: drastically simplifying game development pipelines.

How I learned to stop worrying and delegate responsibility to my bosses, colleagues and clients.
Limited Capacity seats available

Even though good production practices and project management methods are spreading, it seems like the pace of it is quite slow. What can you do if you're a studio manager, producer or developer to make sure your employees, colleagues, clients and vendors learn from mistakes and not repeat the same issues again and again?

This is the story of how, with a few easy changes, I managed to motivate colleagues, clients and bosses to change for the better, increase productivity of videogame projects, save time and money and make everyone involved in videogame projects happier.

You'll also be learning the best and worst that happened to us through real videogame projects, so you can use that knowledge to save time and money on your next project by your own without having to go through hundreds of projects for it.

Designing PC Games with Indian Themes
Limited Capacity seats available

There is an interesting new trend we’ve seen this year where many Indian developers are creating Indian themed games for the PC. Hear from some of them on what they went through while researching these aspects of Indian themes for their games. How come we don’t have more games that have stronger Indian themes? Why is this more prevalent on the PC platform compared to mobile and is a narrative led game more suited for thematic expression compared to a more traditional mechanic based game?

Don't bother with Sprint 0
Limited Capacity seats available

This talk is about the reflective thoughts of two people who built a real money Poker MMOG with their team. A team with experienced poker players whose many assumptions including just knowing the game rules being enough were proved wrong multiple times.

The team learnt that it was futile to try and capture the 'entire' feature set before completing milestones. Instead, it was a process of discovery and efficient iteration. Purists would not call what the team followed a Scrum philosophy; rather it was 'Scrummy' philosophy.

The talk will outline how increasing understanding of the player and customer needs, helped us in coming out with a piece of complex game product, satisfactorily for the users and satisfyingly for us (the production/development/delivery team). We will not delve into the technicality; instead, we will share, how we dealt with unknowns.

Project Growth: A leader’s guide to the team transformation
Limited Capacity seats available

Gaming is a rapidly growing industry. Just one successful title is all it takes to trigger the opportunities for bigger growth.

Now imagine you’re one of those overnight gaming success stories. You're running a small team of 10- 15 people with successful title(s) under your belt. There are new opportunities for expansion. You learn that you’ll have to grow your team to 50-60 people within a few months. What do you do? Space can be acquired, Hardware can be bought, but what about your team, and more specifically your team leaders? Can you make sure they can grow at the same pace?

With this presentation, I’ll show and tell you the situations I’ve faced in my journey as a gaming manager. Our challenges with sudden growth, our related struggles, my successes but also my failures. More importantly, what I did to make sure that my management team was good and ready to face their biggest challenge yet.

Gaming the System: Transforming Indian Games
Limited Capacity seats available

What would it take to create a fundamentally disruptive and relevant laboratory and paradigm for the development of commercial games in India? The answers might surprise you! Since we believe that real equity in Indian content can only surface from a fundamental restructuring of the game studio paradigm in India. Lets envision a future for the Indian industry that breaks from a western stereotype for the creation and distribution of games.

Join Padmini Ray Murray (a game-thinker and teacher) and Avinash Kumar (the director of Antariksha Sanchar, from Quicksand GamesLab), two outsiders to the gaming industry in India, and hear about their experiences in creating games that are as culturally relevant as anything else created so far.

Do videogames have an impact on your life outside the game? Designing Mobile Premium Games in the Age of Free-to-Play
Limited Capacity seats available

But in the face of its presumed demise, Apple still manages to throw lifelines at developers looking to create premium-only experiences by featuring their games every now and again. While most developers are trying to figure out features for Day 7 retention and Conversion KPIs to go after the free-to-play holy grail, a few indies still stick by their premium game roots and are getting rewarded for it. Meet the developers who have created premium games and gotten featured by Apple and learn what are their lessons for developing quality premium games in an increasingly free-to-play world.

How to build and leverage communities in different stages of production
Limited Capacity seats available

This talk explores the art of building and managing a community in a world where games are consumed both as ‘full course meals’ and ‘snacks’.

Abhishek strongly believes that community building should happen in conjunction with the game and not as an afterthought. To highlight this, he will take you through a couple of case studies and talk about how communities can be leveraged to aid different phases of production.

Diversity in Games
In recent times, questions of diversity and inclusiveness have become key concerns for the videogame industry, academia and gamers in general. With the growng appeal of videogames worldwide, there is an increasing need to address how this comparatively young entertainment medium reflects or go counter to the spirit of diversity and tolerance in the stereotypes some of the games perpetuate as well as the people it often excludes and includes. With a generally Western-bias in the popular videogame blockbusters since the very early days of the industry, it is important for Indians to voice our thoughts and the NGDC panel offers the first-ever (arguably) such platform. This panel is an open roundtable discussion that will address questions of diversity related to a vast array of issues addressed by expert panellists and later, in a q&a session with the audience. We look forward to your participation.
